Interesting Web Sites
To say that there is lots of information on the web on mental illness is an
understatement! Here are a few selections to get you started.
Sites from NAMI
- The NAMI Home Page
where our site is located, contains lots of information on mental illness from the family
and consumer perspective as well as news about NAMI national activities
and links to other affiliates.
- NAMI-Anne
Arundel County website has contract information for the affiliate.
- NAMI Carroll County
website has information on the affiliate activities and an online
membership form.
- NAMI-Howard County is our first
Maryland affiliate to have their own website. Get the details on their
support groups, education, special events, Howard County telephone help
and advocacy.
- NAMI
Metropolitan Baltimore is a large, very active affiliate with many
programs and projects for both consumers and family members.
- NAMI Montgomery County
is our largest affiliate with over 800 families. Their website includes
info on their numerous support groups, the Thrift Shop as well as their
annual report.
- NAMI Lower Shore serves
Worcester, Wicomico & Somerset Counties. Their website has a good
list of resources and materials available from their lending library.
- NAMI
Prince George's County serves Prince George's County and has three
support groups: Bowie, Clinton and University Park.
- NAMI DC contains information on
our southern NAMI neighbor, including educational meeting time and location, plus information on
how to contact NAMI DC.
- NAMI Delaware is a provider
of housing services and runs two consumer activity centers and two
consumer support groups. Check out the pictures of their houses under
Housing | Locations. Included on this site is information about training
classes, support groups and advocacy.
- NAMI Pennsylvania
includes information about classes, legislation, newsletter articles and
more.
- NAMI Virginia contains
information about mental illness, family education and support groups.
- Maryland General
Assembly lists the synopses, the text, and the status of bills submitted to the
Maryland state legislature.
- Maryland
State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Mental Health
Administration contains general information such as contacts for the
state facilities, information on services available, how to get help,
consumer rights and responsibilities.
- Maryland local health
departments directory is part of the Maryland DHMH Community and
Public Health Administration website. There are links to the websites of
the 24 local Maryland health departments and information on how to
contact the local health officers.
- Maryland
Division of State Documents contains the online searchable version of the Code of Maryland
Regulations (COMAR), and the Maryland Register.
The Maryland Register is an official publication of the State of Maryland and is
published every two weeks. The Register serves as the temporary supplement to the Code of Maryland Regulations
(COMAR). Any proposed change to the text of State regulations must first be published in the Register. The six most recent issues of the Register are currently available through this site
- Maryland Insurance Administration
is an independent State agency that regulates Maryland's insurance industry and protects consumers by ensuring that insurance companies and health plans act in accordance with insurance laws.
Check the Consumer
Information, Appeals and Grievances page on this site for
information and forms for grievances and release of information. The
forms are stored in Acrobat PDF format, so you will need Adobe Acrobat
Reader (free) to read and print the forms.

Maryland Research Studies
- The NIMH Genetic Study of
Schizophrenia tests family members and the person who has
schizophrenia. Family members are asked to participate in a number of procedures that help scientists measure various family characteristics to see if they run in families.
- The NIMH Inpatient
Schizophrenia Research Program is for people diagnosed with schiophrenia
or schizoaffective disorder and who are between 18 and 55 years old.
- MPRC Research Studies
include both inpatient and outpatient studies as well as studies for
non-patient volunteers.
- Johns Hopkins has its research study information organized by program within
the department of psychiatry. Johns
Hopkins Medicine Epidemiology-Genetics Family Studies and Johns
Hopkins Affective Disorder Section Research Studies describe some of the
research studies.
A Sampling of Interesting Web Sites
- The National
Mental Health Service Knowledge Exchange network, or KEN is produced by the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services,
Adminstration Center for Mental Health Services. It contains factsheets on many aspects of
mental illness, references to further reading material, and its own FTP site, ftp://ftp.health.org/pub/ken for downloading
documents.
- The Psychiatry
Online is the site of the International Journal of Psychiatry from the United Kingdom.
This site is a reference point for psychiatrists and others interested in mental illness
and mental health. It is an online journal with special sections on schizophrenia,
children and adolescents and much more.
- National
Institute of Mental Health is the place to read many of the publications on mental
illness produced by NIMH . Also includes information on clinical studies seeking patients.
- The American
Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has fact sheets for families on over 50
psychiatric disorders affecting children and adolescents.
- NARSAD,
the research foundation formed by NAMI and three other organizations in 1986. NARSAD
raises and distributes funds for scientific research into the causes, cures, treatment and
prevention of severe mental illness. There are interesting articles on some of the
researchers and their work, as well as information on new medications.
- Internet
Mental Health from Canada, has excellent information including descriptions of mental
disorders, medications, treatment, research, pamphlets of information and articles.
- CenterWatch
lists clinical trials by disease categories. This site also contains a listing of newly
approved drug therapies.
- Social Security Online
has information on benefits, applying for services and Social Security law. You can also
find handbooks and publications on Social Security and disabilities.
- American
Association of Suicidology is a non-profit organization dedicated to the understanding
and prevention of suicide. It has information on suicide and resources for survivors of
suicide.
- Doctor's
Guide to the Internet contains articles on medical news and alerts for schizophrenia,
depression, anxiety and other illnesses. It also has general information on each of these
illnesses. Check for up to date information on medications and disease.
- Treatment
Advocacy Center is working to strengthen assisted treatment laws to reduce violence,
homelessness, incarceration and suicide in persons with severe brain diseases. Legal
and medical resources are available on the website as well as a database of
preventable tragedies by state.
- Schizophrenia.com
is a website containing a wealth of information on schizophrenia. There are different
discussion and chat areas for people diagnosed with schizophrenia, parents, spouses,
offspring, siblings and more.
- Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation
has educational material on bipolar illness, chat sessions and
discussion groups for families of children with bipolar disorder.
- American
Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to advancing our knowledge of suicide
and our ability to prevent it. They provide education, support research and
have support programs for suicide survivors.
- Screening
for Mental Health (formerly
the National Mental Illness Screening
Project) is a nonprofit organization
developed to coordinate nationwide mental
health screening programs and to ensure
cooperation, professionalism, and
accountability in mental illness screenings.
- Public
Citizen's eLetter an objective source of information about the risks
and benefits of drugs to treat serious mental illnesses. This website is
a project of Public Citizen's Health Research Group in consultation with the Treatment Advocacy Center.
- BPD
Central a collection of resources for people who care about someone
with Borderline Personality Disorder.
- Walkers in Darkness and Antidepressant Facts.com
are sites with online support groups for mood disorders consisting of
forums and chat rooms. The Antidepressant Facts site also has current
articles on mood disorders.

Some of the links from these sites are very useful, some are provocative. Note that
some reflect views on mental health issues that differ from the NAMI perspective.

- Internet
Mental Health from Canada has an extensive list of mental health links.
- Univ.
of Chicago's Dr. Bob web page has links grouped by institutions involved with mental
health and mental illness, journals, and university mental health resources as well as
links to other resources on the web. The site has a very interesting section on
psychopharmalogical tips.
