Maryland Mental Health Organization Web Sites

There are several mental health advocacy organizations and mental health professional organizations in Maryland. Here are the ones  that we have found on the Internet. The following organizations are listed in alphabetical order within topics. The organizations may or may not have similar priorities as NAMI Maryland.

Mental Health Advocacy Organizations

  • Depression and Related Affective Disorders Association (DRADA)'s mission is to alleviate the suffering arising from depression and bipolar illness by assisting self-help groups, providing education and information, and lending support to research programs. The website contains articles and book reviews concerning depression and other affective disorders.
  • Greater Washington Coalition of Mental Health Professionals and Consumers, Inc. is a grass roots organization of mental health professionals from all disciplines, joined by consumers of mental health services, and consumer advocates. Our goal is to preserve quality mental health care and the consumer's rights to choice, personal privacy, and control over treatment decisions. To achieve this goal we are committed to:  educating the public and the business world about the effectiveness outpatient psychotherapy, exposing the abuses of managed care, regulating managed care through legal and legislative action, and replacing managed care with a more pro-patient model of mental healthcare delivery
  • The Maryland Coalition of Families for Children's Mental Health is a grassroots coalition of family and advocacy organizations dedicated to improving services for children with mental health needs and their families, and building a network of information and support for families across Maryland.
  • The Maryland Disability Law Center (MDLC) is a private, non-profit organization staffed by attorneys and paralegals. MDLC is the Protection and Advocacy organization for Maryland. 
  • Mental Health Association of Maryland is dedicated to improving the mental health of all
    individuals and achieving victory over mental illnesses. This site has newsletters and information of the programs offered by MHAMD.
  • On Our Own of Maryland is a statewide mental health consumer education and advocacy network, promotes equality in all aspects of society for people who receive mental health services and develops alternative, recovery-based mental health initiatives.
  • SPEAK promotes the prevention of youth suicide and works to dispel the social stigma surrounding suicide and depression through a campaign of education and awareness at the community level.

Mental Health Professional Organizations

  • The Community Behavioral Health Association of Maryland is the professional association for Maryland's network of community behavioral health programs operating in the public and private sectors. CBH is the result of a July 2001 merger between the Maryland Association of Psychiatric Support Services (MAPSS) and the Maryland Council of Community Mental Health Programs (MCCMHP).
  • DC Metro Chapter of NASW (National Association of Social Workers) website has information of interest to social workers such as conferences, newsletters of the organization and information on their advocacy efforts.
  • The Greater Washington Society for Clinical Social Work, Inc. was established in 1975 to promote and advance specialization of clinical practice within the social work profession. It is an organization of graduate clinical social workers who practice in a variety of settings including mental health clinics, family agencies, psychiatric hospitals, medical facilities and private practice in the Metropolitan Washington area. 
  • The Maryland Mental Health Counselors Association (MdMHCA) represents licensed clinical professional counselors in the State of Maryland. MdMHCA is a chapter of the American Mental Health Counselors Association.
  • Maryland Psychiatric Society has information on legislation and articles from the Maryland Psychiatrist journal. It also includes a directory of Maryland psychiatrist members that can be queried by location, specialty or other criteria.
  • The Maryland Psychological Association (MPA) website contains information that may be of interest to MPA members, to psychologists, to non-members, to those training or interested in training to become a psychologist, to other mental health professionals, and to those seeking psychological services. 
  • Maryland Society for Clinical Social Work-Guild 49 is a professional organization dedicated to promoting and protecting the interests of clinical social workers in all practice settings and at all stages of their careers so that they may best serve their clients and the general public. The clinical society is committed to responding to the wants and advocating for the needs of a diverse membership regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. The website lists conferences and workshops as well as clinical social work news items.
  • National Association of Social Workers Maryland Chapter has a mission to support, promote and advocate for the social work profession and its clients, for just and equitable social policies, and for the health and welfare of the people of Maryland.
  • The Washington Psychiatric Society (WPS) is a medical specialty organization composed of approximately 1,000 physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses, including substance abuse disorders. WPS covers the National Capital Area with regional chapters representing the District of Columbia, Suburban Maryland (Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties) and Northern Virginia (Alexandria City, Arlington, Fairfax and Loudon Counties), and is affiliated with the internationally recognized American Psychiatric Association (APA).

Public Health Organizations

  • The Mental Hygiene Administration has a list of all of the core service agencies. There are links to those agencies that have websites. The CSAs are the local mental health authorities responsible for planning, managing, and monitoring public mental health services at the local level. 
  • Maryland Health Partners gives information on the new public health system implemented in 1997 in Maryland. There is information shown for both consumers, families and providers. Of special note is the list of key goals of the Maryland Public Mental Health System which identifies the responsibilities of the Mental Hygiene Administration, Core Service Agencies, and Maryland Health Partners.
  • MEDBANK of Maryland, Inc. provides access to prescription medications for chronically ill, low-income, underinsured/uninsured Maryland residents. MEDBANK assists healthcare providers and patients in completing the paperwork required to enroll patients in Pharmaceutical Company Patient Assistance Programs.
